Celebrating Black History Month: Knaan & Bob Marley

Posted on February 15th, 2012

It is easy to look at Knaan and Bob Marley and make comparisons. They both come from politically volatile countries. They both created music out of their struggle. They both created anthems that became worldwide hits. When Knaan was given the keys to Bob Marley’s home and studio by Stephen and Damian Marley, it seemed that a type of passing of the torch was taking place.

So, Knaan went to the famous Tuff Gong Studios and lived in Bob Marley’s old home where much of his possessions still remain. For the first three weeks Knaan simply soaked up the environment and made no music. He basically read, ate, watched movies and soaked it all in. Then in one week, Knaan pounded out 7 songs, with what I’m guessing had Bob Marley’s revolutionary and irie DNA embedded in them.

When a song like “Wavin Flag” comes out, it is more than a pop single, but an anthem. And when you look at artists like Knaan and Bob Marley, it’s hard to see ‘pop stars’, when the music they make has an impact much deeper than the standard top 40 hit. Much like Bob Marley, I’m almost certain that Knaan’s music will resonate long after his time on the charts is over.
