Hey guys, it’s Mike from the New.Music.Live. team and today is an exciting day for Lady Gaga fans.
Lady Gaga’s brand new video for Yoü and I from her latest album Born This Way, makes its official debut tonight on MTV at 7:49pm ET., but she surprised little monsters on Tuesday afternoon when she tweeted a link to the video on Youtube.
The video begins with a scene with Gaga wearing a gorgeous black dress and matching hat, walking along a country road in Nebraska. A sequence of short clips of Gaga shows the singer wearing a wedding dress, falling in front of an ice cream truck, encased in a glass box filled with water, and tied to a chair with a man. The song chimes in over the scenery of a Nebraskan corn field.
Gaga appears as several different characters including a man (her alter-ego, named Jo Calderone,) and as a mermaid (her alter-ego, named YuYi.) Throughout the video she is seen walking down a country road, playing a piano in the middle of the cornfield as Gaga, (while sitting on the piano simultaneously as Jo) held captive as Gaga in a chair by a man, dancing in a barn with her back-up dancers as Gaga, and singing in a bathtub as Yuyi. Very confusing, I know.
Describing the narrative of the video is difficult because most people are still trying to figure out what it represents. I have a few theories, but until Gaga tells us more, we can’t be entirely sure. She did reveal in one interview that the video is about “the idea that when you’re away from someone that you love, it’s torture. It’s a very powerful and awful and strange feeling when you’re away from the person that you love. I knew I wanted the video to be about me sprinting back and walking hundreds of thousands of miles to get him back.” Okay, so this says a lot, but why the mermaid? And who does the man represent? The ice cream truck? So many questions.
Those who have seen the video, including myself, are raving that it might be Gaga’s best video to date, or at least since Bad Romance, which we crowned Video of the Decade.
Either way, Gaga is definitely keeping things interesting. Check out the video below!
If that wasn’t enough, she is nominated for awards will be performing at this year’s VMAs on August 28th.
