There’s something eerily comforting about the new Britney Spears video. Not only is “Til The World Ends” a kick ass video and song, but the overt homage to “I’m A Slave 4 U” reminds us all that Brit is Pop’s Reigning Princess, no matter what year it is.
Watching the post apocalyptic video for the first time took me right back to when Brit was rebelling against her good girl image by writhing around in a sweaty sauna. There’s sweaty writhing in this video too but instead of rebelling from her current image, Brit is rebelling against changing that image. Confusing? Hear me out. Britney’s strength lies in her consistency. Sure, she’s had her ups and downs in her personal life but professionally, she’s delivered a constant stream of dance pop classics and sexy but safe, visually appealing videos.
In the new pop age where it seems like every artist is trying to reinvent themselves every other week, Britney is staying true to who she is. Other than over-the-top epicness, you never know what you’re going to get from Gaga. Katy Perry has gone from spunky pop pin-up girl to futuristic and abstract in her ET video. Rihanna went from a soft-spoken Bayesian beauty to a punk-rock, edgy bad ass. But, Miss Britney has continued to stay that Southern sweetheart who we can count on for great videos and great songs to dance our asses off to.
Don’t ever change Brit Brit.
