New.Music.Live.: Merry Mixtapes!

Posted on December 24th, 2010

Hi, it’s Cam from the New.Music.Live. team. Tomorrow is Christmas and although not everyone in the world celebrates it, that doesn’t mean people can’t enjoy some prezzies this time of year.

This week has seen an unusual amount of free mixtapes hit the internet, most likely as a thank you from artist to fan just in time for the holidays. Because we care, we’ve rounded them up for you to make it a little easier.

jj Kills
Sweden’s mysterious rap-loving duo jj layer their heartbreaking Balearic pop over classic tracks from Dr. Dre, M.I.A., Jay-Z, Notorious B.I.G. and Young Jeezy.
Download it here.

Rick Ross Ashes to Ashes
Yeah! Rozay caps off a stellar year with a mixtape boasting verses by Drake, T.I., Wale, Wiz Khalifa, Big Sean, Ne-Yo, and Birdman, as well as production by Lex Luger, Clinton Sparks and Toronto’s own Boi-1da.
Download it here.

Diggy Simmons Past Presents Future
Teen wonder Diggy outdid everyone with his tape: he got legendary producer DJ Premier to host and mix the thing. Diggs tries his hand at ‘80s and ‘90s classics by Nas, Eric B & Rakim, A Tribe Called Quest and Mobb Deep.
Download it here.

Atlas Sound Artificial Snow
Not so much an actual mix as much as different versions of a Christmas song that Atlas Sound/Deerhunter frontman Bradford Cox wrote for his friend’s Christmas compilation.
Download it here.

Big Boi vs The Black Keys The Brothers of Chico Dusty
Again not a mixtape by definition, but an actual mash-up between two of the year’s best albums: Big Boi’s Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty and The Black Keys’ Brothers. And although mash-ups are pretty damn passé, this one really works. Call it Brother-ly love. Ahem.
Download it here.

Korallreven Another Dream by Korallreven
Easily the most diverse and in my opinion, the coolest mixtape of the bunch, Swedish dream pop outfit present a disorienting flow that somehow meshes the likes of Slim Thug, The Radio Dept., Zomby, SALEM, Gucci Mane, the Cocteau Twins and their own “Honey Mine” featuring Victoria Bergsman of Taken By Trees. Amazeballs.
Download it here.

Dipset Dipset Christmas
Last but not least is the Dipset crew spreading yuletide cheer with their Christmas-themed tape featuring the likes of Jim Jones, Cam’ron, Juelz Santana and another version of Kanye West’s “Christmas in Harlem.”
Download it here.
