O.U.C.H. (Ontario University Competition for Hip Hop) is one of the biggest dance competitions in Ontario. There are 15 colleges and university teams competing this Saturday, November 17th, 2012 at the John Bassett Theatre in the Metro Convention Centre in Toronto. This year will mark the competition’s 10th anniversary. All of the proceeds benefit Simcoe Hall Settlement House in Oshawa. Tickets are $20 at the door, cash only.
The competition is broken down into two sections. The main part of it is the hip hop choreography. This is where each school competing will showcase their 4 minute routine before the judges. The judges this year are Jon “Drops” Reid from Supernaturalz Crew, Kojo “Tuch” Mayne, and Jungle from Do Dat Entertainment with special guest, MuchMusic’s very own Lenny Len (Director, choreographer and one of the official judges from NML: Battlez) and he’s hosting the whole entire event.
The Competing schools are as listed: Trent University, McMaster University, University of Waterloo, Durham College, Brock University, Western University, George Brown College, Humber College, York University, Ryerson University, Laurier University, University of Toronto St. George, University of Toronto Scarborough, Carleton University and Guelph University.
At the end of the show they have a Freestyle round where one member from each school is chosen to battle for the title of freestyle champion.
There will also be guest performances by Much Music’s best dance crews from NML Battlez like the GeekFreaks, Breakreation, Bucc’N’Flvr, Happy Feet and DEUCEnDip. They will each be showcasing their best performance from the show.
O.U.C.H is a non-profit annual hip hop dance competition founded in 2003 by Ray Mendoza, a student from the University of Waterloo. His goal was to “establish friendly competition amongst universities, and to promote the exciting, growing and influential culture known as hip hop”. O.U.C.H invites university and college dance teams from across Ontario to compete for the prestigious O.U.C.H title. The competition has grown exponentially over the past ten years bringing together talents all across Ontario and giving students a chance to enhance and showcase their skills through art and dance. The whole event is presented by Durham College. Hope to see you all there!
