Today was a sad day in hip hop music and in the world of music itself. Legendary musician, rapper, activist, and director Adam “MCA” Yauch passed away at the young age of 47 after a three year battle with cancer. He was one of the founding members of iconic hip hop group the Beastie Boys. He also founded the Milarepa Foundation and film production and distribution company Oscilloscope Laboratories.
Yauch was born in Brooklyn and formed the Beastie Boys with Michael “Mike D” Diamond and Adam “Adrock” Horovitz in high school when he was 17. The Beastie Boys went on to sell over 40 million records. They released eight LPs, four of which hit #1 on the Billboard charts.
This Sunday at 10pm on MuchMusic and this Monday at 9 pm on MuchMoreMusic, MuchMusic will be celebrating the life and legacy of Adam “MCA” Yauch. From pioneering rapper with the Beastie Boys to social activist for Tibetan Freedom, we go back into the MuchMusic vault to tell his story. Be sure to tune in to remember Adam “MCA” Yauch.
