So this isn’t the newest or most exclusive track you’re going to see me write about but I think watching this video is absolutely mandatory for everyone who loves soul music.
When The Weeknd released House of Balloons, he became an indie darling immediately. His tracks were being remixed by every producer who wanted to make a name for themselves, and his originals were to be heard at every barbershop, lounge and restaurant you can imagine. And then he released Thursday, a great mixtape in its own right but it never had a chance to live up to the hype of his first release.
But there was heat on Thursday, “Rolling Stone” could arguably be his best song and the first real video that he made. However, for OVOXO fans like myself, it was all about “The Zone,” a nearly seven-minute track that literally puts you in a zone. The combination of two of Toronto’s and Canada’s finest, Drake and The Weeknd, showed that this could be the start of a beautiful partnership (also see “Crew Love” from Drizzy’s Take Care). The track was bananas, and while maybe Thursday fell a little further back in your playlist, “The Zone” remained in the same spot.
The Weeknd continues to pour out new videos, and this one so far takes the cake.
