The Best of the Countryfied Pop Songs

Posted on April 5th, 2011

Rihanna may be the latest pop star to take one of her songs and give it a country twist, but she’s not the first. It looks like pouring Nashville flavour all over your pop hits is the new cool thing to do. From Bieber to Gaga, it’s gotten all country up in this.
So let’s take a look at some of the best countrified pop songs:

Rihanna ft. Sugarland – “California King Bed”
When Rhi Rhi popped up at the ACMs, we were all wondering what the eff she was doing there, right? Well, as soon as she and Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles started singing Rihanna’s song “California King Bed” with a country twang, I was sold. Country is a good look for you Rhi.

Justin Bieber ft. Rascal Flatts – “It Should Be Me”
When Bieber announced he was releasing a remix album, it was a sure bet that he would pair up with hip-hop’s best and brightest. But, I don’t think anyone saw this collabo coming. Bieber and R.Flatts took on Justin’s ballad “It Should Be Me” and killed it. I dare you to tell me you didn’t cry when you first heard this song. You’re either lying or heartless. Yeah I said it.

Lady Gaga – “Born This Way”
Gaga pulled out all the stops on this highly anticipated single and we thought it couldn’t get any better after 10-year old Maria Aragon showed us its softer side. But, once again, Gaga has outdone herself. Mother Monster re-released “Born This Way’s” country version on iTunes and part of the proceeds will go to relief efforts in Japan. Go buy it. Now!

Katy Perry – “Firework”
“Firework” has been covered so many times since it’s release, but who knew the best rendition would come from Katy herself. While performing on Ellen, Perry busted out a countryfied spin on her uplifting anthem. It was a perfect fit. Maybe Katy should trade in her California bikinis for some Texas Daisy Dukes.
