Who is the Queen of Pop and Does it Matter?

Posted on July 7th, 2011

Hey everyone, it’s Mike from the New.Music.Live. team. Rolling Stone recently named Madonna as the Queen of Pop based on fan voting. As an avid pop-music fan, I’ve read and heard about the term “Queen of Pop” being thrown around often. Perez Hilton often refers to Lady Gaga as the Queen of Pop and, at the MMVAs, Selena Gomez intro’d Lady Gaga’s performance with that very same honour. Other outlets have argued that Britney Spears is the Queen, but what about Beyoncé ? Mariah Carey? Christina? Adele? Alright, enough, so who is the King? Justin Timberlake or Justin Bieber? Usher or Chris Brown? Most of all, does it matter? I thought it was just England that was concerned with royalty.

I argue that it doesn’t matter who the “Queen of Pop” is. You can’t even deem a single female artist with that honour as they’re each breaking records of all different kinds at the same time. Lady Gaga sells albums and Katy Perry sells singles. Madonna, Cher, and Aretha Franklin haven’t seen the top of the charts in quite some time, but over the last few decades, they have all contributed more than their fair share to the genre of pop and the music industry as a whole. On the other hand, it’s only human nature that we argue our favourite artists are #1. We just can’t expect everybody to agree on the same artist.

The rest of Rolling Stones’ list is below.

10. Mariah Carey
9. Elton John
8. Cher
7. Katy Perry
6. Aretha Franklin
5. Beyoncé
4. Tina Turner
3. Britney Spears
2. Lady Gaga
1. Madonna

Who do you think is the Queen of Pop, or do you think it doesn’t matter? Comment below!
